Our black little Soul has been consuming oil quite greedily lately. I tried switching to full synthetic to stem the black tide but to no apparent affect. Next I installed an oil catch can between the pcv and intake.
Ordered this kit of Amazon:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
It’s so shiny! Dig that metal flake.
Decided to install it here on this bolt. The can doesn’t weigh much so it shouldn’t be an issue.
Bracket fits here just fine.
The whole assembly in place just need to plumb it now.
The red line shows the old routing and the blue will be the new tubing. The kit came with some fly blue tubing.
From PCV to the can.
From can to intake. Had to use one of the step up adapters included in the kit to fit onto the larger nipple at the intake. The kit came with clear tubing but I cut a bigger piece from tubing I already had. I also had to use one of my own pipe clamps as the kit only came with 5.
Here it is all installed before I put the engine cover on.

PREVENT ENGINE FROM INHALING OIL
REPLACE PCV VALVE WITH ‘60S-STYLE
VALVE COVER VENT FROM NAPA

I mean ... it works and is cheaper.

Does it take forever to put a black Soul back together?

Should we call Soul mechanics exorcists?

seriously what is this catch can crap i can’t even
![]() 10/22/2018 at 12:56 |

I don't understand why these don't come from the factory this way. Money but it it'd be so cheap.

id ditch that clean hose that came with the can. looks liable to crack.
![]() 10/22/2018 at 13:06 |

B ecause people would be incapable of checking the oil level in the can every so often

I read that in a Halloween frame of mind. Perfect amount of creepiness.

That’s an ominous headline.

That's what I was going for.

Yo u sound just like my mom.

Aren't those the Demon mechanics?
![]() 10/22/2018 at 13:22 |

Yeah probably. I'll have to find something closer to the stock tubing.

This and money.

An d they could charge to service them.

Real insanity wolf would just rip off the tube and forgo any filters

The PCV is connects to the air intake which provides a vacuum, which then sucks blow-by gasses from the head, to keep them from getting caught in the engine block and self-igniting. Unfortunately, this sometimes means that a lot of oil vapor condenses in the air intake, and can cause issues.
So a catch can separates the oil droplets from the vapors, giving the oil somepl ace to condense and be collected (and usually drained and discarded with every oil change).

It depends on how apart it is.

You’re a lucky guy.

I know what a catch can is, and what a PCV system is. Hence the Insanity Wolf meme. Ripping the PCV system off and putting a vent in place is not a recipe for a healthy engine, but it is a recipe for an early 1960s engine and an engine that will not inhale oil. Insanity Wolf = something that may technically solve a problem, but in a horrible way that creates other problems or is just wrong.
Ex:

Or run the engine without oil. Or top off the oil with gas.
![]() 10/22/2018 at 13:53 |

I like the last option. Do you think that’ll even out my torque curve?
![]() 10/22/2018 at 13:55 |

Oh, I replied to your comment that said “seriously what is this catch can crap i can’t even” and assumed you didn’t know what it was for. I did see the insanity wolf meme you posted, but I didn’t make a mental note that YOU posted it.
Today I failed at social media- ing.

How I Fixed my Wife’s Black Soul
![]() 10/22/2018 at 14:18 |

The “seriously what is this crap” was joking/continued advocacy for the insanity wolf position to prolong the gag, but I might have been too subtle.
![]() 10/22/2018 at 14:18 |

It’s worth a try, after all gas is cheaper than oil.
![]() 10/22/2018 at 14:21 |

But did you kick- start her heart?
![]() 10/22/2018 at 14:33 |

You’re good, I’m just slow on the uptake today.
![]() 10/22/2018 at 14:59 |

I am not sure what made you pursue this solution...I would presume your wife’s soul would bene fit from a meditation retreat or even exorcism , rather than car parts.
![]() 10/22/2018 at 15:11 |
|
I am not sure it is ‘ fixed’ yet.
![]() 10/22/2018 at 15:12 |
|
My soul is calmed by the addition of car parts so I figured it must work for her.
![]() 10/22/2018 at 15:15 |
|
So are you modifying her soul to be more compliant? Or are you trying to maker her soul more robust?
![]() 10/22/2018 at 15:45 |
|
Nope. Bump started it. ( ° °)
![]() 10/22/2018 at 15:47 |
|
More robust. Trying to keep her Soul around longer.
![]() 10/22/2018 at 16:06 |

Did some checking on the catch can... and realized you have the GDI engine and like some other DI engines, can have issues with crap building up in the intake.

I see your point there. Touche.
